Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks issued an executive order Thursday enforcing a juvenile curfew at National Harbor after a violent brawl at the waterfront location over the weekend.
, effective 5 p.m. Friday, requires anyone 16 or younger without supervision to be off the property between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
The bustling business and entertainment district is a popular hangout for oft-unaccompanied groups of youths, some of whom have engaged in vandalism, theft and other criminal activity. In the most recent incident on Saturday, dozens of disruptive teens were seen fighting and shoplifting, resulting in county police having to disperse the giant crowd.
鈥淭he safety and well-being of our residents, visitors, and businesses at National Harbor are of the utmost importance,鈥 Alsobrooks said. 鈥淭he implementation of a juvenile curfew is a necessary step to address the recent incidents of unruly behavior and ensure public safety. We are committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to preserve the vibrancy and security of National Harbor.鈥
The curfew comes after months of engagement and collaboration with the Peterson Companies, National Harbor鈥檚 Management Company, administration leadership and county police to better understand and respond to public safety concerns at the Harbor.
These discussions resulted in new legislation for a youth curfew currently under consideration by the county council that would replace Alsobrooks’ order.
