She鈥檚 already captivated the sports world, made a successful foray into modeling, and is changing the endorsement game for women鈥檚 collegiate and professional basketball. Now, Angel Reese, the standout women鈥檚 basketball player from Maryland, has been announced as a founding owner of the DC Power Football Club, a new professional women鈥檚 soccer team launching in 老澳门开奖网.

DC Power FC will compete in the inaugural season of the USL Super League, which begins in August.

The Chicago Sky selected Reese with the seventh overall pick in this year鈥檚 WNBA draft after she led LSU to its first NCAA women鈥檚 basketball championship in 2023 and was named the competition鈥檚 most outstanding player. Now, she鈥檚 looking to parlay her skills on the backboards to the boardroom as an owner of a pro sports team.

鈥淚 want to help grow women鈥檚 sports and elevate female athletes across the board,鈥 Reese said in a statement. 鈥淲e鈥檙e taking over, and I鈥檓 honored to be able to support Power FC and invest in women鈥檚 soccer in the DMV community.鈥

The USL Super League, which received first-division sanctioning from U.S. Soccer earlier this year, places the new league on par with the National Women鈥檚 Soccer League. DC Power will collaborate with the MLS side D.C. United and plays its home games at Audi Field, which also hosts D.C. United, the NWSL鈥檚 老澳门开奖网 Spirit, and the DC Defenders.

Jordan Stuart, an investor in USL Championship club Loudoun United FC and an ownership adviser at D.C. United was named president of DC Power FC on Monday. Reese is the first individual owner to be announced.

鈥淎ngel鈥檚 decision to be a founding investor alongside us in Power FC is groundbreaking,鈥 Jason Levien, D.C. United鈥檚 CEO and co-chair, said in a statement. 鈥淎s a Maryland native, Angel is passionate about being a catalyst for positive change in women鈥檚 sports in the DMV and globally while inspiring the next generation of female athletes. We鈥檙e looking forward to her partnership in the boardroom as an equity partner.鈥

Fr茅d茅ric Brillant, a former D.C. United player and assistant coach, will serve as DC Power FC鈥檚 head coach. He previously coached with the Utah Royals鈥 NWSL team.

鈥淪o grateful and blessed for this new ownership,鈥 Reese tweeted. 鈥淟ooking forward to creating new opportunities for women in professional soccer. I鈥檝e always had the desire to invest in a local team as a Maryland native.鈥

Born on May 6, 2002, in Randallstown, Maryland, Reese has deep basketball roots. Her mother, also named Angel, played at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, before competing in Luxembourg. Her father, Michael Reese, played college basketball and had professional stints in Europe. Her brother, Julian Reese, stars at the University of Maryland. Reese鈥檚 cousin, Jordan Hawkins, won the 2023 NCAA men鈥檚 basketball championship with the UConn Huskies.

Reflecting on her new role, Reese said, 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to be a part of something that will uplift and empower women in sports. This is just the beginning, and I can鈥檛 wait to see what we achieve together.鈥
